Embracing the Unexpected: Budget Travel Adventures in Kyoto
"Just in case you weren't convinced that we make it up as we go along, there's your proof. We were literally walking past, heard the crowd noise, and we just walked in."
In this episode of our travel vlog series, where we take a sabbatical to explore the world on a shoestring budget, we found ourselves in the culturally rich city of Kyoto, Japan. Our journey is about making the most out of every dollar while seeking out enriching experiences—and we're eager to share how you can do the same, no matter your age!
Starting off, we attempted to visit the Kyoto Imperial Villa, a site known for its historical significance and beautiful gardens. However, we quickly learned the importance of preparation: entry to such locations requires prior booking, and a valid ID is essential. We encountered a detailed check-in process that required disclosing our age and other personal details, echoing similar experiences across the city. Despite the formality and a tour entirely in Japanese, the efficient system provided us with English audio guides, and the visit lasted precisely one hour. Although we initially hoped for a leisurely day at the gardens, the visit was far more structured, resembling a guided school trip.
The real charm of our day came unexpectedly. After leaving the villa, we stumbled upon a local university football game. Without any tickets required, we blended into the crowd, seizing the opportunity to observe local customs and community spirit firsthand. The post-match tradition was particularly striking: players and referees respectfully bowing to each other and to their supporters, showcasing a deep level of respect and politeness—quite unlike the often heated matches back home!
Our adventures in Kyoto illustrate that even on a limited budget, it’s possible to have meaningful and unexpected encounters. Each experience teaches us something new, whether it’s navigating the formalities of a historic site or spontaneously joining a local event.
