Unforgettable Encounters:
A Day at the Elephant Sanctuary
Today, Angela and Alan embarked on one of their most unique and heartwarming adventures yet—an intimate encounter at an elephant sanctuary. This experience, part of their global sabbatical, highlights their commitment to responsible and meaningful travel, emphasizing encounters that respect both nature and wildlife.
Preparing for the Jungle Spa:
The couple started their day by packing essentials as advised by the sanctuary—towels, swimming outfits for the mud baths with elephants, and plastic bags for their muddy clothes. They were also reminded to bring their passport numbers for life insurance purposes, hinting at the adventurous nature of their day ahead.
Ethical Interaction:
Angela and Alan made it clear that their chosen sanctuary was no ordinary tourist attraction. This was a place of refuge for elephants who had spent their lives working and were now retired and cared for in a respectful environment. The sanctuary ensures that these majestic creatures are not chained or ridden; instead, they are allowed to roam freely, with interactions that are safe and considerate towards the animal’s well-being.
The Elephant Spa Experience:
At the sanctuary, the duo participated in a "jungle spa," where they got the opportunity to be up-close with the elephants, participating in mud baths—a natural sunscreen and skin care for the elephants—and showering with them, an activity that involved getting sprayed by the elephants themselves. This interaction not only allowed them to connect with these gentle giants but also to appreciate the intelligence and playful nature of the elephants.
Observations and Reflections:
Post-spa, Angela humorously noted how she had "missed some bits" in her shower, still finding herself stained with mud, a testament to just how immersive their experience was. They observed the elephants' behavior closely, noting that the animals were not forced to interact and could wander off as they pleased, which reassured them about the sanctuary’s ethical practices.
Cost and Value:
The experience was not cheap—costing them 3000 units of local currency—but included transportation to and from their hotel, food, and drinks, making it a comprehensive package. Despite being beyond their usual budget, Angela and Alan felt the experience was invaluable, especially given the ethical considerations and once-in-a-lifetime interactions they enjoyed.
"It’s like a similar donation. Like I can hear elephant, but don’t put you to buy. If you like to use some, you can do it. Yeah. Don’t have to buy if you want. Right. If you want to hear an elephant, you can look some you can buy." - A snippet from their guide, which Alan found amusing and slightly confusing, but endearing nonetheless.
Their day at the elephant sanctuary was a profound reminder of the beauty of compassionate travel. Angela and Alan’s journey continues to inspire, showing that travel can be both enjoyable and ethical, with respect for the creatures and cultures that make each destination unique.
