Angela and Alan's travel adventures continue as they set off on a 600-kilometer journey from Kyoto to Hiroshima aboard Japan's iconic Shinkansen, or bullet train. The couple's approach to travel—seeking authentic and meaningful experiences while on a budget—shines through in their detailed account of this day trip, combining both historical reflection and the practicalities of modern travel.

Morning Commute:

Their day began in the hustle of Kyoto during rush hour, capturing the essence of a typical morning in the city. The duo navigated Kyoto Station to catch the Nozomi 13 train to Hiroshima, explaining their use of IC cards—Japan’s integrated transit cards which can also be used for small purchases in shops, enhancing their convenience for travelers.

Onboard the Bullet Train:

Once aboard, Angela detailed their economy class seating, which she noted was surprisingly comparable to business class but more budget-friendly. Their decision to travel by bullet train, despite the cost (over £600 just on travel within Japan by the end of their trip), was driven by the desire to experience Japan’s famed railway system. Angela’s description of their train meal—a savory bento box of chicken, rice, and fresh vegetables costing about £7—provided a glimpse into the quality and value of Japanese convenience food, much higher than what one might expect for a similar price in the UK.

Hiroshima Visit:

The highlight of their journey was their visit to Hiroshima, a city known worldwide for the tragic atomic bombing in 1945. Standing near the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome, they reflected on the devastating impact of the bomb, which killed approximately 200,000 people. This moment was poignant and a stark reminder of the horrors of war. They also visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, which they described as sobering, emphasizing the deep historical significance of their visit.

Environmental Note:

Angela also highlighted a small yet telling challenge: the scarcity of public trash bins in Hiroshima, which, while preventing litter, made disposing of their lunch waste a cumbersome task—a minor but memorable part of their day.
